Music Video - Focus Group Audience Feedback
For my focus group, I am going to use my form group, as they are within the age bracket of my groups TA, and it also happens to be quite convenient, as I meet with them every morning. Also, my form group isn't that large in numbers, and I would say is probably the appropriate size for a focus group. I have plans to hold my focus group during a form time, I will show my form group the music video-and maybe film their reactions when watching it, and if any surprise me, I shall keep them in the footage. After they have viewed the video, I will then ask them the 7 questions we composed, and record there answers. When asking them these questions, some comments may arise which could potentially trigger me to ask other unplanned, but relevant, questions that will relate back to the video. I think that happenings such as this are what are the bonuses of focus groups; because sometimes, in focus groups, if you try to just ask a question, receive one answer and move on, your not going to get as good responses as you could potentially get. Whereas, if you asked other spontaneous questions that you thought of on the spot, and that sparked discussion and debate, you will find yourself, and your focus group generating more of an intellectual conversation, and as a result you will be benefitting more from the indepth feedback your receiving. Also, if you don't try to create discussion and debate, your defeating the object of holding a focus group by not doing so.
I think i will most likely arrange to have my focus group on Monday morning (31st Jan), or if not, an alternative morning next week. From my focus group, I want to gather a clear understanding of how well my group have targeted our audience, and whether it was enjoyable for the audience to watch. I want to see what they see as the best element of the video, and elements of it they think could have been better, or could be/have been improved. My main aims for the focus group are really to see whether they think the video is of a high quality, whether it complimented the music well, whether they enjoyed watching it and, also, if it held their attention for the entire time. Gaining positive and useful criticism from this focus group is really important, and their comments will be highly valued since they are in the age bracket of our TA.
After i have watched back the footage of the focus group, I will use comments and quotes as proof of varying feedback from our audience; and will also put a copy of the footage on the blog if possible. If any particular comments stick out to me in the footage that someone may have said, then I will most likely comment on them myself; doing an analysis of why they may have said this, and whether i agree with them or not-and also, if it was negative feedback, what could have been done to prevent a negative look on the video, or particular element.
Music Video Audience Feedback - Focus Group Questions
As a group, we have decided we are each going to organise separate focus groups, in which our videos will be viewed, and the questions below will be asked. I think that a focus group will be an effective way of gathering audience feedback, as opposed to using questionnaires. I think that by organising a focus group, the informal, more relaxed environment will enable the group to give more genuine, detailed responses to the questions, therefore heightening the chances of receiving more well-thought out, and in depth answers-giving me a better understanding of how well our music video has targeted our TA. The questions we have composed are;
2. Would you say the narrative (story) is easy to follow?
3. Did you enjoy watching it?
4. Did the music video hold your attention? Or did you find yourself getting bored of it easily?
5. What was your favourite component of the video? i.e The concept/narrative, any particular effects.
6. Is there anything in this video that you feel could be improved?
7. After watching this video, would you want to see the cover of the single, and the webpage for the band?

BLOG UPDATE - 11/1/11 - Digipak Progression
Today I completed the paper copy of my CD design; my design has a series of stills from my groups music video-the key shot being of the tramp's eyes and the headphones on the front cover. My back cover is a still of the tramp leaning against the tree, which was a long shot, and for my inside cover i plan to use one still, and flip it and put it on the other cover-the still i want to use for my inside cover is a still from the section where the tramp is 'fitting/dancing' in fast forward, and the camera captures a variety of close up and far away shots. If i don't flip the shot and place it on the other side of the insert, i plan to just use another still from that particular section of footage and use that as a replacement. I had various ideas in regards tot he cover of the CD when experimenting with the editing software; i thought of having 'The Pigeon Detectives' logo/banner that i had created and almost creating a 'wallpaper' effect, with the image repeated all over the cover. I thought that this could reinstate the brand's logo, and the strong brand identity as a whole. Another idea I thought of, was having the still of the tramps face with wide eyes as a base for the front cover, and then the logo/banner filling the whole of the cover. The flaw of this idea is that it may be a bit too much for the cover, with the image and the banner combined, the audience may not know what they are meant to be concentrating on. Another idea i had was an extension of the 'wallpaper' effect idea, playing with the logo; and my idea was that hidden in amongst all of the repeated logos, would be the title of the single, but in the same format of the logo-with the same colour, font, size, and style of arrangement. I think that this cover would look quite neat and would tie in with my overall brand identity; considering the fact that my web page also has quite a sleek and tidy look. I also thought of combining both the image/still from the video, and my logo, and blending the logo into the image; since i shall be putting the still in black and white. I feel that the logo will then be recognized, and the picture on the front is what would grab the attention of the audience initially. I will also most likely include the silver/grey lines that are on my web page, on my CD, as I feel these are quite a subtly important part of my brand identity, and also a simple element that could be a common theme throughout my products.

BLOG UPDATE - 5/1/11 - Class Feedback
Today we continued on with our editing, experimenting with the colour saturation and putting our shots into black and white; and also trying out various to effects and filters. We want our video to begin all in black and white, and then when the chorus kicks in, we plan on boosting the colour; to suggest that the music injects life into the video. We want to refine our video, and go through it picking out errors and making sure that the shots are well timed and coherent with the music; utilising musicality, and making the video flow in a smoother way.
We also received some feedback from other groups, giving their opinions on our videos so far;
- 'The black and white is a good effect, it makes the detail stand out more and has greater impact. But, some shots (outdoors) may be to light for the black and white.'
We are still yet to play around with the black and white footage and colouring, and the colour saturation in general, so we will assess what shots don't look as aesthetically pleasing as other ones; and with this feedback, will focus on the outdoor shots and their quality specifically.
- 'It goes from having no children in the shot, to loads, (like they just appear out of nowhere).'
We weren't aware of this, because obviously we knew what was going on with the story and how the children 'appeared'. We have filmed the children coming out of the school, but haven't yet uploaded the footage due to it being on the small camcorders; which happen to be a little bit of an inconvenience. So this error can be rectified if we upload the other footage, but we feel that we may be able to correct it without uploading more footage.
